i2i are a B Corp recruitment company

OK. It’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival time of year again.  And over here at i2i we’ve been chatting about some of the legends of the jazz world and their superpowers (cos we’re a pretty intellectual bunch y’know?!).

And it struck us that we can all learn a little something from each of them.  So prepare to be amazed as we explain how you can model your next candidate search on the greatest jazz icons of all time!

Miles Davis, ultimate jazz legend, was known for spontaneously creating magic. His next level skills in improvisation saw him adapt on the fly time and again to lay down some of the most memorable moment of jazz.  And improvisation is your secret weapon when you’re looking for new talent too.  Be ready to swerve and explore new angles, stay in tune with what’s happening around you. Who knows which candidate will be your next star soloist?

Think Duke Ellington, the maestro who knew exactly how to spotlight each band member’s strengths. When you’re looking for top talent, it’s your gig to mix the right characters to get that ensemble vibe just right. Make sure everyone’s solo shines!

John Coltrane wasn’t just playing music; he was having a conversation. He knew how to listen and how to respond to lift the riff beyond what was imaginable.  Recruiters, take note: listen more than you speak. Understand the deeper needs of your company and candidates to hit all the right notes.

Charles Mingus mixed styles like a pro, turning jazz on its head. When you want to create something truly incredible, staying adaptable and open to new rhythms (think technologies and trends!) can set you apart from the crowd.

Ella Fitzgerald wasn’t just the First Lady of Song; she was also a mentor. She knew how to seek out unsung heroes and polish their talent until they shone like true stars.  Master your recruiting craft and take time to coach others in your team. Great talent attracts great talent, just like Ella always did.
