Why, when and how to write a cover letter

1. Why…

A cover letter is an elaboration on your CV (which you need to keep to a maximum of two sides of A4) and can tell a potential employer who you are why you are perfect for the role on offer.

This letter should be more in-depth than the summary on your CV, and relate back to the specific role and company that you’re applying to. This way, you can show an employer that you are serious about getting the job!

You can also use a cover letter to explain more about your experiences, interests, strengths and abilities. This also shows that you can communicate well because, again, a CV is short and sweet.

2. When…

In short, you should write a cover letter every time you apply for a new job.

As noted above, your cover letters should all be tailored to the specific roles you are applying for, but you can keep a generic copy of your cover letter to embellish for each role so that you don’t have to rewrite it from scratch every time.

Ultimately, it’s up to you when you send a cover letter with your CV and submission; however, we would suggest that, unless the job advertised specifies “don’t send a cover letter,” then send one!

This additional effort will prove to employers that you are keen on the role and engaged in the process. With a little research, your cover letter can take your experiences and let the reader know you know what you are doing and are perfect for the role.
